Sole Trader FAQs
A sole trader is an individual who owns and runs their own business, taking responsibility for all profits and losses.
You generally need to register for Self Assessment if your total gross trading income exceeds £1,000 in a tax year. This means income before expenses across your trades, rather than profit or a separate allowance for each platform. Exceptions and other reasons to file can apply, even below that amount. Check HMRC’s guidance.
If you are required to send a return, report the relevant income and allowable deductions using HMRC’s online service or suitable software. Keep supporting records and check whether Making Tax Digital for Income Tax applies to you. We can help you prepare the return and understand the filing and payment deadlines.
Yes, sole traders can claim a wide range of business expenses, including equipment, travel, and office costs, as long as they are incurred solely for business purposes.
We provide expert guidance on tax planning, bookkeeping, filing, and ensuring compliance, so you can focus on running your business.
